Identifying Symptoms with Valencia Headache Care Specialists
An Imbalanced Dental Foundation
Our dental foundation consists of our teeth, muscles and joint. Research has shown that an imbalance of our dental foundation can result in migraine headaches, chronic headaches, jaw and neck pain, tooth grinding, tinnitus and vertigo.
Imbalance of our dental foundation can be caused by:
- Stress which increases muscle tension in the jaw creating imbalances over time.
- Physical trauma to the face, head and neck even if it occurred as a child.
- Dental work, orthodontics, wisdom teeth extraction.
- Time – your mouth and jaw are made up of living tissue which can shift as you age.
When our biting forces are out of balance our muscles and joint over compensate which can cause nerve pain that manifests in the head, neck and face, even if your jaw feels fine.
Headaches & Migraines
Migraine Symptoms
- Throbbing pain on one side of the head
- Nausea or sensitivity to light
- Physical activity worsens the discomfort
- In more rare occasions, migraine sufferers may experience visual disturbances
Tension Headache Symptoms
Over 90% of headaches are tension headaches. They are often misdiagnosed as migraines.
- Feeling of intense pressure or tightness in a band that wraps from the forehead to the back of the head
- Feeling of tightness might extend to sides of the head or even to the neck
- Typically last for a few hours, but sometimes for several days
Medication Overuse Headaches
- Using pain relieving medication for your headaches on a daily or very frequent basis can cause a "rebound headache" once the medication wears off.
- These headaches typically occur in the morning.
Cluster Headaches
- This type of headache is rare and involve a series of short, but painful headaches behind the eye
- Cluster headaches can cause redness and tearing to the eye

TMJ Pain/ Tooth Grinding
Jaw, Face, Neck, or Ear Pain
The many nerves present in the jaw can result in pain appearing in nearby areas, and can cause pain or tenderness in different locations even if the jaw itself does not hurt.
Destructive Tooth Grinding and Tooth Wear
Imbalance of our dental foundation not only leads to pain but also causes you to grind your teeth. Excessive tooth grinding is destructive and causes breakage of teeth and dental restorations.
Limited Range of Motion
If the jaw does not move as far or as easily as it should, it might be a sign of a problem with the TMJ. Other common symptoms include the jaw locking in an open or closed position, as well as clicking or popping noises during movement.
Vertigo & Dizziness
Vertigo and dizziness manifest as a disruption of the sense of balance and a feeling that one’s surroundings are shifting or moving. This feeling of movement is not “real,” but rather a result of an underlying problem that is disrupting the function of the body’s most important balance organ – the inner ear.
Tinnitus
Tinnitus can manifest as any tone of hissing, buzzing, clicking, or ringing in the ears, from a low volume up to a level that makes it difficult to hear other sounds. In most cases this sound is not “real,” but rather a result of an underlying problem that makes your brain believe that it is receiving stimulus from the auditory nerve.
